During automatic calculation of various characteristic numbers several parameters must be properly chosen. Inadequate choice of parameters may result in either wrong results or failure of data analyses programs (calculation will be stopped by the executing program in a controlled way). In any case automatically calculated results shall be checked with respect to plausibility and consistence with underlying physical principles.

The following informations are related to some of the most important parameters, especially if tidal characteristic numbers are going to be calculated.

Choice of Master and Auxilary Reference Locations for Data Analysis

Graphical representation concerning the proper choice of master and auxilary locations for data analysis. Locations must be chosen prior to any calculation of tidal characteristic numbers. Also available as Encapsulated PostScript file. Graphics available with German text only.

Master and auxilary locations are required for the correct calculation of tidal characteristic numbers mainly because phase-related informations are transferred via this chain of locations (Graphical representation). Identification as well as correct numbering of events (e.g. tidal high water, tidal low water) becomes possible even in widespread or meanderings systems coverd with tidal flats. Also available as Encapsulated PostScript file. Graphics available with German text only.

Choice of a Proper Period for Data Analysis

To obtain reasonable results for automatically calculated tidal characteristic numbers the period of data analysis must be properly chosen of course (Graphical representation). Each choice should take into account also the diurnal inequality of the tides. Also available as Encapsulated PostScript file. Graphics available with German text only.

Choice of Several Time Windows for Data Analysis

Master and auxilary locations in combination with the values used for different time windows of data analysis guarantee a phase-correct numbering and identification of high- and low-water events (Graphical representation). Also available as Encapsulated PostScript file. Graphics available with German text only.

In addition to the above mentioned time windows for a phase correct identification of tidal high and tidal low water time windows must be also prescribed to allow for a proper correlation between slack water time of flood current and high water as well as slack water time of ebb current and low water (Graphical representation). Also available as Encapsulated PostScript file. Graphics available with German text only.
