Tidal Characteristic Numbers of Potential Energy Anomaly
From BAWiki
Motivation
The calculation as well as the graphic visualization of various tidal characteristic numbers of potential energy anomaly (PEA) contributes to an improved understanding of the vertical density stratification in areas like coastal seas and estuaries.
Automatic analyses for all of the above mentioned tidal characteristic numbers of PEA are carried out for 2D-data by the programs NCANALYSE (mode TDKS).
Periods of analysis:
- mode TDKA
- flood current: period between ebb slack (or start of flooding) and flood slack;
- ebb current: period between flood slack and ebb slack (or end of flooding);
- tide: period between first ebb slack (or start of flooding) and second ebb slack (or end of flooding).
Definitions for the Tidal Characteristic Numbers of PEA
Flood Current
Mean PEA Flood Current
Mean value of PEA during the flood current duration of a tide.
Ebb Current
Mean PEA Ebb Current
Mean value of PEA during the ebb current duration of a tide.
Tidal Cycle (between two subsequent ebb slacks)
Maximum PEA
maximum value of PEA during a complete tidal cycle (period between two subsequent slack water times of ebb current).
Minimum PEA
minimum value of PEA during a complete tidal cycle (period between two subsequent slack water times of ebb current).
Mean PEA
average value of PEA during a complete tidal cycle (period between two subsequent slack water times of ebb current).
Tidal Variation of PEA
difference between the extreme values of PEA during a complete tidal cycle (period between two subsequent slack water times of ebb current).
Mean PEA Flood Current : Mean PEA
Ratio of mean PEA of flood current to mean PEA during the complete tide.
Mean PEA Ebb Current : Mean PEA
Ratio of mean PEA of ebb current to mean PEA during the complete tide.
Mean PEA Flood Current : Mean PEA Ebb Current
Ratio of mean PEA of flood current to mean PEA of ebb current.
Tidal Variation of PEA : Mean PEA
Ratio of tidal variation of PEA to mean PEA of the tide.
