Motivation

Computation as well as visualization of the tide independent characteristic numbers of suspended sediment transport gives some insight into the

  • local (rate of change) of suspended sediments (mass),
  • mean (horizontal) suspended sediment transport due to advection,
  • mean (horizontal) suspended sediment transport due to diffusion,
  • strength of sources and sinks, as well as
  • sediment exchange between water body and bottom (deposition and erosion)

within the period of data analysis.

From these, conclusions can be drawn on the mean (residual) transport of suspended sediments, and i. e. the relative significance of advection versus diffusion. Also the significance of deposition and erosion can be elaborated. For estuaries, fresh water flow, bathymetry, as well as wind shear are considered to be the main influencing factors.

Definitions for the tide-independent characteristic numbers of suspended transport

An automatic analysis is carried through by the computer program NCANALYSE.

Divergence of Horizontal Suspended Sediment Transport

(Mean) divergence (kg s-1) of the horizontal suspended sediment flux within the period of analysis for all computational cells (control volumes).
No example graphics available yet.
Data analysis: NCANALYSE.

Horizontal Suspended Sediment Flux due to Advection

(Mean) horizontal suspended sediment flux (kg s-1) due to advection for the period of analysis at computational edges (lateral faces of control volumes).
No example graphics available yet.
Data analysis: NCANALYSE.

Horizontal Suspended Sediment Flux due to Diffusion

(Mean) horizontal suspended sediment flux (kg s-1) due to diffusion for the period of analysis at computational edges (lateral faces of control volumes).
No example graphics available yet.
Data analysis: NCANALYSE.

Sources and Sinks

(Mean) flux (kg s-1) of suspended sediments within the period of analysis due to sources and sinks within computational cells (control volumes).
No example graphics available yet.
Data analysis: NCANALYSE.

Suspended Sediment Exchange with Bottom

(Mean) exchange rate (kg s-1) between water body and bottom due to deposition and erosion for computational cells (control volumes).
No example graphics available yet.
Data analysis: NCANALYSE.
