Significance of the File

contains grid and optionally the values of physical measures and is the standard format for the visualization software Tecplot.

File-Contents (in Catchwords)

  1. title
  2. Variables, meaning the names of the coordinates and the physical measures
  3. one or more zones; each zone can e.g. contain the data of one time step. Zones may refer either to finite differences grids or to finite elements grids. The files used in the BAW-DH refer to FE grids and contain:
    • zone name
    • number of nodes and number of elements,
way of sorting (FEPOINT = FE grid, node sorted, meaning in a row all variables of a node) and element types
    • node coordinates and the values of the physical measures at the nodes
    • connectivity table

Chapter 4 of the Tecplot User Manual (s. $PROGHOME/examples/Tecplot/manuals/tecplot_um.pdf) contains a complete description of the file format including e.g. text strings, geometric elements, labels and auxiliary data.
