Example: Salinity variation and flow velocity in the Außenems Estuary ( TRIM - 3D )

The animations demonstrate the natural variation of salinity and flow velocity in the Ems-Estuary. The data shown have been generated using the three-dimensional numerical model TRIM-3D. The model takes into account hydrodynamic pressure in the water body (non-hydrostatic pressure distribution).
The calculated results have been visualized along specific profiles in form of vertical sections:
The seaside edge of the model-area is situated beyond the island Borkum in the North Sea. The Unterems is included in a simplified form. The animations have been prepared for two scenarios which differ in the fresh water inflow. The animations runs over two days with a time-step of 10 min.
Further interesting insight into the salt transport regime of the Außenems Estuary may be obtained by looking at the calculated Characteristic Numbers of Salinity (independent of tides).
