Maximum Rise Velocity

This figure shows the maximum rise velocity within the period of data analysis in the Ems Estuary calculated for the scenario of a synthetic storm surge.

The maximum rise velocity for the water surface is calculated from the variations of water level within a given time span (typically half an hour) and extrapolated to a one hour period. A general increase can be observed from the North Sea (top left) towards the Dollart bay (bottom right). The velocities vary from approximately 1 m/h to 2 m/h. They are significantly higher compared with the calculated maximum fall velocities.
