Definition

Fixed bar in a waterway to determine the height of the water level above or below a fixed reference horizon for immediate reading by shipping; Water level indicator whose zero mark is at the level of chart datum. The water level can be brought directly in relation to the marine charted depth, eg. a water level of + 2.00 m corresponds to a charted depth of sounding -2.00 m
