Negative surge/drawdown

Definition

Lowering of the water level adjacent to the moving vessel, during a long period of time, induced by the displacement flow (BERNOULLI flow; energy balance = kinetic energy + potential energy; colloquially: undertow). Depending among others on aspect ratio and speed of the vessel, the main share of the primary wave system. The dynamic drawdown measures the extent to which a ship sinks in during travel additionally to the loaded draft.
